How to Get Started
It can feel overwhelming to get started, so here are a few tips:
- Reach out with any questions through my contact form or info provided below.
- Obtaining an instrument: Renting through a local music shop is a fantastic, low cost option. Especially if the student is young and will grow into bigger sizes eventually. Shops can also assist you with the needed accessories (bow and shoulder rest).
- Buying is also an option, but I usually recommend this once the student has reached a full size.
- Avoid online retainers, as an instrument is sized specifically for the student, and the quality of an instrument can vary widely online.
- Trusted local options: Terra Nova Violins, Blackerby Music Shop, and Westbank String shop.
- Sample of what progress can look like:
- Most beginners will begin with 30 minute lessons, as we start building the foundation of holding the instrument, using the bow, and making those beginning sounds.
- For a young student, we typically reach a milestone of Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, and develop a sense of feeling rhythmic patterns within a month,
- Depending on the age of the student and consistency of practice, by 6 months we would have started learning to read music, have a good grasp of the bow hold, know the notes of the fingerboard by heart, and have a repertoire list of 20 or more songs.
- As the student advances, the length of lesson will grow with them.
- Coming to view a lesson before signing up is also encouraged.
